Hairport wins award for aiding youths
by Sandy Carter, for the West Linn Tidings; March 2005 Both
tears and laughter flowed freely at the West Linn Hairport Friday morning when
Tom Brady, director of Parrott Creek Child and Family Services in Oregon City
surprised owner Cheryl Keicher and her staff with roses and the first Parrott
Creek Community Service Award. The award recognizes the Hairport's crew as
"Outstanding Community Partners, for bringing out the beauty of
disadvantaged youth," giving extra special meaning to the words on the sign
above the Hairport entrance: A Full Service Salon. Keicher and her Hairport
experts cut and style hair at no charge for court-involved teen boys referred to
Parrott Creek's residential program. Brady said the experience has transformed
the young men, in more ways than one. "Most of boys have never had a
professionally styled haircut or been treated with such respect," commented
Brady, "and they come out changed -- looking great, talking, and making eye
contact with our counselors for the first. Cheryl is making a real
difference."
